There isn't a day wherein a System Admin is not
on his/her toe. They have to tolerate the end users with their never
ever ending complaints poring in day in and day out. Not a day is
gone when the system admin does not has an emergency call.
And when it comes to Audit day, the System Admin dreads the day.
In some cases, each PC is painfully pried open and all the components
like display card, RAM, type of processor, etc are listed out. Of
course, the same information can be got by switching on the PC also.
For a network of about 100 pcs this could roughly take a week or
even more. This is because the end users would not like to be disturbed
or would not tolerate the dissection of the pcs in front of them.
But
this age is gone now. No more does the System Admin has to spend
sleepless nights. No more messy and dusty hands and playing with
the screwdriver. Nor does the System admin has to go personally
to each PC and switch it on. All this is now possible with the birth
of Netman - the network tool for LAN inventory. The inventory is
both in terms of hardware and software. Netman is a very user friendly
application that makes use of the network to report the PC configuration
on the desktop of the System Admin. It gives a detailed description
of the PC including the type of OS , its serial no, licensed / unlicensed
package installed and even the devices configured on the said PC.

What
you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about NetMan?
When the first version of NetMan was released, I installed it just
because I was asked to do it.
My understanding of NetMan was that it is a tool for the network
administrator and to help him get system information of all the
computers in the LAN, we need to install it.

How
do I use Netman to organize myself better?
Time and again, most of us are confronted with issues regarding
how to organize ourselves better. With the world moving at a pace
that we are always trying to catch up with, it becomes all the more
important to think about this issue deeply.

Why Time Synching the LAN is that important?
Networks allow us to share information and co-ordinate the tasks
associated with them. To co-ordinate, we need the time information.
Any Event that occurs at the network should be time tagged to make
it as meaningful information. But on a network environment there
is no guarantee that any node's time will be correct with respect
to another node.
